How to select your Photographer

An Extract from the 'The Wedding Planner'

How to select your Wedding Photograher, an extract form the Wedding Planner

Everyone has a digital camera and if to save money on your photography, you use a well intentioned amateur, chances are you are likely to be disapointed.
There is a world of difference between an amateur and a professional: the professional has experiance, creativity, and the best equipment.
He or she, knows instictively what makes the perfect shot and they have the skill and speed to capture the moment before it passes - forever.

The question is how do you find the right person to trust with these precious memories.

Start making enquireis as soon as you have booked your venue, or even before then if you already know a photographer you want to hire -
the best photographers are snapped up well in advance so better to change your wedding date in order to get him or her.

Look at the images in the photographer's advertising and on their website. These will give you an idea of what styles and approaches he uses.

When you have found one whose work attracts you, pick up the phone and speak to him..
If it's a large company and they can't tell youwho will be takeng your photographs on the day, move on.
It's important, right from the start, that you build a relationship with your photographer.

Meet with at least three photographers and ask to view at least two complete wedding albums and not just their best shots.
Every wedding is different and this should be reflected in each album and not be repeats of the same pictures and poses.

A good photographer will be asking you qustions not just about your wedding venue(s):
where the wedding will be, the date and time, the number of guests etc., but he will also be asking questions about you and the style of your wedding.
Your answers will give him an idea of your overall expectations.

Ask yourself, do I like tis person? Does he or she, make me feel comfortable?
Do they exhibit the confidence to be able to control your guestson the day and get on with the job done quickley and efficiently?
Does he have a sense of humour?
Will he be too 'bossy'?
A defining question is, would we invite this person as a guest to our wedding? If not, don't ask him to be your photographer!

If you like what you see, ask what is included in the package as this can vary enormousley.
Tell him beforehand about any additional requirements, for example, a framed engagement photograph, a wedding book or, a Parents album - you may be able to negotiagte a keener price.
Otherwise, generally, the package will include the cost of meeting just before the wedding (ideally at your wedding venue); on-the-day costs; the proofs and certain number of re-prints.
However, also ask if any travel expenses are included?
How long would be set aside for formal photographs? (An hour is more than enough time.)
How many photographers will be present on the day? Wll they attend the Bride's home?
Will they stay for the first dance?
How many pictures will they take?
Do you receive all of the proofs or just a selection?
Are they stamped 'PROOF'?
Will they be available to veiw on-line?
How many prints are included in the album?
Is the cost of the album included?
How much are the re-prints?
How soon after the wedding will you recieve the photographs?
Will he sell you the copyright? If so how much?
Does the quote include VAT?
Does he have a wet weather contingency plan and a plan should he be unable to attend or the camera fails?

Only pay a deposit when the details have been agreed in writing.

How do we organise our wedding photography?

Most couples select a shortlist of photographers whose style they like. If we are on your shortlist, then here's the sequence of events that we suggest:
  1. Check whether we are available for your Wedding Day
  2. Look at our portfolio. If you're not local and you'd like more examples than are online, please let us know.
  3. Which venues would you like us to attend?
  4. Which parts of your special day do you want us to photograph - Brides home, Ceremony, Reception?
If you select us as your photographers, then we suggest:
  1. We try and arrange a time to meet when you can inspect our portfolio and make a detailed plan of your requirements. If you live abroad, then this is usually done via email with a short meeting the day before your Wedding
  2. We send you a booking form, with your wish list of photographs and an outline of the timings we have agreed
  3. If all is in order, you confirm your booking by paying a non-refundable deposit of £300, the remainder will be invoiced and paid 60 days prior to your Wedding
  4. The week before your Wedding, we make contact to assure you that we are expecting to be at your event or any rehearsals, and also to update your instructions to us, in case anything has changed
  5. The Wedding Day! We arrive 30 minutes before the agreed start time at your first venue.
  6. Within 4 weeks of the Wedding, you receive your Album and other items you may have ordered.
